DIY Retractable Photo Backdrop + Design Tips for 3D Printing

I built a fully custom retractable photo backdrop to cover up the mirror in my workspace that limited the filming angles I could use. The design was inspired by a planetary gear train I designed at my first job. You can select which backdrop color you want to engage by pulling or pushing on the shifter knobs and then just spin the large gear to raise or lower the selected sheet. No longer will I have to stretch out a cloth over some c-stands, now within seconds I can set up the background. Plus when not in use, it is stowed well away from everything and looks pretty cool at the same time!

I’ve also weaved in some design tips that you can use when embarking on your own projects!

My Glowforge and Creality CR-6 SE 3D printer were instrumental to carrying out this project.
